Estonia has a long, shallow coastline along the Baltic Sea, with more than 2300 islands dotting the shore. The two largest islands are Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. There are more than 1500 natural and artificial lakes in Estonia; the largest of them, Lake Peipus, forms much of the border between Estonia and Russia. The Narva and Emajõgi are among the most important of the country’s many rivers.
No evidence of Lower Palaeolithic occupation has yet been found in Estonia, primarily because the region remained glaciated for several thousand years longer than neighbouring Latvia and Lithuania.
