The evidence for the extent of areas controlled by the tribes is mostly derived from Ptolemy’s Geographia (c.150 AD), supported by scattered references in other historical sources and a number of inscriptions.
Belgae is the name Roman authors gave to peoples living in northern Gaul during the Late Iron Age. Some of the Belgae settled in southeast England during the second century BC.
The names of some of the tribes in Celtic Britain relate to others living Belgic Gaul, e.g. the British Atrebates and the Atrebates in northern France, the Catuvellauni and the Catalauni in northeast France, and the Parisi and the Parisii living on lands now occupied by the modern city of Paris.
The Carvetii are only known from three Roman (third and fourth century AD) inscriptions, and may have been part of the neighbouring Brigantes confederation.
