ROMAN EMPIRE, Early Archaic Period (c.750-546 BC)

Roman Empire: A Note on Chronology

AntiquityComplete replaces the traditional BC/AD convention with a continuous xx-00-yy format to resolve the ‘Two-Year Problem.’ This timeline discrepancy occurs because BC ticks mark the beginning of a year, while AD ticks mark the end. Although there is no year zero, there is a vertical coordinate in space (00) where the last second of the old year meets the first second of the new year. On a horizontal timeline, the beginning of 1 BC sits one year to the left of 00, and the end of 1 AD sits one year to the right. This eliminates the discrepancy and validates the use of the 00 datum line.

In these pages, the term ‘Roman Period’ is used instead of ‘Roman Iron Age.’ Once the Pre-Roman Iron Age established metallurgy, subsequent periods evolved culturally, politically, and economically—complexities that a simple material label fails to capture.
